Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had two loves, one for comic books and one for action movies. I’ve always loved to draw, and thought that I could incorporate my love for action movies in my drawings to create an action-packed comic series.
In 1994, I got my chance. Produced by my older brother M. Terry Jackson under our joint publishing company, Gothic Images Studios Inc., I created, wrote and illustrated Derreck Wayne Jackson’s Strapped which ran for six issues from November 1994 to January 1996. Patterned after R-rated action movies, Strapped was the story of a man who almost dies at the hands of a crime boss, only to survive and take revenge by becoming a vigilante. I like to think of it as “what if I was the Punisher”. Ironically, the main hero looked just like me.
Throughout the year 2004, I illustrated comic-book style portraits of people for commission as a short-lived side business.
In February 2005, under my own publishing company, Big Fat Zip Entertainment, I created, wrote, illustrated, and produced Stray Bullets, a three-issue mini-series. Once again, patterned after my love for action movies, Stray Bullets is the story of a woman whose crime boss father was murdered, prompting her to take revenge by tracking down those responsible for her father’s death, although she’s not prepared to face the person who did it. The mini-series was collected and sold as a graphic novel in July 2005.
In my spare time, I have been learning video editing in hopes of becoming a film director. In 2006, I wrote and directed a short film based on my comic Stray Bullets. The short film served as a “prequel” to the mini series and features the characters from the book. The main character of the movie, Sydney, was played by my younger brother David Jackson.
In 2007, I worked on Raven, a comic mini-series about a man who tries to save the love of his life, a district attorney set to indite a crime boss who wants her dead before his trial begins. Raven remains unpublished.
Currently, I’m working on a new short film, Rival, which begins production summer 2008. Rival is the story of Detective Alex Mason, a cop who finds out just how far everyone is willing to go to be with the woman he loves in an action-packed, battle to the death, where obsession becomes an understatement. Rival also stars my brother David, this time as Alex Mason. Rival is slated for release in October 2008.
My goal is to bring my love of action movies full circle by creating, writing and directing my own, to show the world my love for this genre and perhaps launch my directing career. If not, then I would be proud to say that I, at least, did what I loved and made an action movie.
